Switch off for better work/life balance

When you’re running your own business, it can feel like you’re connected to your workplace 24/7. But to maintain your health and wellbeing over the long term, it’s worth switching off sometimes so you can rest and recharge. 

It can be hard to ‘switch off' when we're surrounded by technology that keeps us continuously connected. For small business owners, it's particularly challenging because you're the boss and ultimate responsibility rests on your shoulders.

Working long hours and dealing with constant stress can lead to lower productivity and poor health, so it's important to take time out and nurture your connections outside of the workplace.

Here are some tips to help you achieve a better work/life balance while running your business:

1. Set yourself a reminder to take regular breaks

You can set an alarm on your phone or computer or just take a 5-minute break when you're between tasks. Taking a meal break or a short walk around the block can clear your mind and help you to better manage stress.

2. Commit to ‘switching off' at a certain time each day

Technology can blur the boundaries between work and home and make you feel like you're always on. Make the commitment to switch off your work email and phone for at least a few hours each day so you can focus on something outside of work, like your family, sports, a hobby or the latest must watch TV series.

3. Treat yourself to some time off

It's great when your business is busy, but you can't run at full steam all the time. After a busy period, treat yourself to an afternoon off or a long weekend. Take the time to switch off from the workplace and do something that you enjoy.

4. Outsource, delegate or just say ‘no'

 This one can be tricky when the buck stops with you. Challenge yourself to think about the tasks you can pass on to others, whether in your business or outside of it. Weigh up requests on your time and just say ‘no' when the benefit is less than the effort involved.

5. Plan your day before you start

Set a time that you plan to finish by and work out what your priorities are for the day. While there will always be unexpected tasks popping up during the day, it will make it easier for you to focus on getting the important things done first.

By creating a better work/life balance for yourself, you'll be working towards better mental and physical health outcomes as well as setting a positive example for others within your business.
